SPAIN (Catalonia): 21 February – General strike called by pro-independence trade union Intersindical-CSC.
ITALY: Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) will remain closed throughout today, Wednesday 20 February 2019 following yesterday’s fire in a basement area of the departures terminal Although the air quality has normalised where the fire had occurred, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) is not yet allowing operations to resume. All departures and arrivals for today have been diverted to Rome Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO).
UK: Effective from Wednesday 13 March 2019, new restrictions will be in place relating to drone restrictions around UK airports and airfields. Drone users who choose to ignore this rule could be charged with a criminal offence. More information is available at: dronesafe.uk.
INDIA: (Mumbai) – Tens of thousands of farmers from across Maharashtra State are reportedly embarking on a seven-day march on Wednesday 20 February from Nashik to Mumbai where they plan to rally at Azad Maidan on Wednesday 27 February 2019. Travellers are likely to encounter ongoing disruptions along route and in Mumbai and are advised to allow additional time to reach their destination.
BRAZIL: Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Salvador and Sao Paulo will host festivities during carnival season 1-9 March 2019. Major thoroughfares in each city are likely to close during events which will lead to increased traffic congestion. Due to the elevated risk of petty crime, travellers should remain vigilant and avoid carry large amounts of money or valuables.
VENEZUELA: Nationwide protests have been called by Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido for Saturday 23 February 2019; the largest rallies are likely to take place in major cities such as Barquisimeto, Caracas, Maracaibo, Puerto Ordaz and Valencia. Heightened security will be deployed for affected areas as thousands are expected to attend; protestors could hold rallies along major thoroughfares resulting in delays and disruptions.
MEXICO: A yellow volcanic warning – the second of three alert levels – remains in place amid ongoing volcanic activity at the Popocatepetl Volcano Although no mandatory evacuation orders have been issued, ash could continue pushing in a northerly direction, possibly impacting Puebla, Tlaxcala and north-central Veracruz in the coming days. Popocatepetl is located 37 miles from Mexico City; Flight disruptions are possible at Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) and Puebla International Airport (PBC) if a significant eruption occurs.
USA & CANADA: Another winter storm is affecting parts of Northeastern US and Southeastern Canada and is expected to continue through to Friday 22 February 2019. Snow and ice could potentially cause flight delays and cancellations at regional airports, including – but not limited to – those serving Bangor (BGR), Boston (BOS), Charlottetown (YYG), Fredericton (YFC), Halifax (YHZ), Moncton (YQM), Montreal (YUL), Ottawa (YOW), Providence (PVD), Quebec City (YQB), and Toronto (YYZ).
